FAQs on China Tour Package

I’m interested in some of your city packages. Can you combine them into a top China tour itinerary for me?

Certainly—you can choose your preferred private city tour itineraries. All the private China travel packages we list are customizable, and our professional travel advisors will help craft a personalized trip that suits your tastes.

Since most direct international flights from countries like the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, India, Malaysia, and Singapore land in Beijing or Shanghai, we’re happy to arrange your transfer to start any private city package you’d like.

What are the opening hours of tourist attractions?

Generally, most attractions are open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM between April and October, and from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM from November to March. Note that some spots have ticket sales cut-off times, usually an hour before closing.

Is tap water safe to drink?

No, tap water in China isn’t safe to drink unless boiled, but it’s fine for brushing teeth. Hotels typically provide a water heater in each room for making coffee or tea, and two free bottles of water are replenished daily. Additionally, we offer free bottled water to our clients.

What’s the tipping custom in China?

Tipping guides, drivers on escorted tours, and bellboys who help with luggage is gradually becoming common in China, similar to other countries, as a way to acknowledge good service. However, tipping isn’t necessary for food service, taxi rides, etc.

Tipping is optional—if you’re unsatisfied with the service, you don’t need to tip. TravelChinaGuide doesn’t support poor service. But if you’re very happy with your guide or driver, or their service exceeds expectations, a tip is a nice way to show appreciation. We can offer tipping suggestions based on group size.

I notice some of your China vacation packages include high-speed train rides. Are they air-conditioned? Is there a dining car for meals?

Yes, all high-speed trains are air-conditioned, and there are dining cars with food and drinks. That said, the pre-packaged meals and snacks on board are often not very satisfying. So, if you’d rather not use the dining car, we recommend bringing some simple food for lunch or dinner.

Where can I see pandas, and can I hold one?

Chengdu, known as the home of giant pandas, is the best place to see and learn about these cute animals. You can visit either the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Pandas or the Dujiangyan Panda Base (about 1.5 hours’ drive from Chengdu). Note that holding pandas isn’t allowed at any base.

If your schedule is too tight for Chengdu, you can also see pandas at Beijing Zoo, Chongqing Zoo, Shanghai Zoo, or Xi’an Panda House.

Will vegetarians be able to get suitable food on your tours? Is it hard to find vegetarian restaurants on our own?

Yes, we cater well to vegetarians on guided tours. For included meals, we’ll make arrangements based on your dietary restrictions. When meals aren’t planned in the itinerary, your guide can recommend suitable restaurants. Most mid-range restaurants in major tourist cities have photo menus, making it easier to choose.

Can I use US dollars at stores and restaurants? What about credit cards?

In most cases, only Chinese currency (RMB) is accepted at stores and restaurants. Major credit cards like Mastercard, Visa, and American Express are accepted at most large department stores and malls. To avoid issues, it’s best to ask if credit cards are accepted before ordering.

For convenience, we recommend exchanging enough RMB for personal expenses. You can exchange money easily at most airports, downtown banks, and star-rated hotels (hotels usually only exchange for their guests). Remember to bring your passport—you’ll need it to exchange currency.

Our group has three people—can we share one room?

Yes, you can share a hotel room for convenience. In this case, we’ll book an extra bed (including daily breakfast) for the third person during escorted China tours.

We’re planning a honeymoon trip to China—what destinations do you recommend?

As a diverse, lively country, China is popular with honeymoon couples. Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are top international cities that never fail to impress, with plenty to do for all couples. For the most romantic spots, Guilin (with Yangshuo), Lijiang, and Hangzhou are favorites among newlyweds. If you want something unique, mysterious Tibet is also a great choice.
